Ages ago there was a prolonged drought. The Ute were suffering, and the animals
and plants were dying. Among the Ute was a woman who was filled with sadness and compassion at what the drought
was doing to the Land and the People. So this woman went to the base of Mount Shavano and prayed
to the Gods for the rains to return and the drought to end.
The Gods appeared to her and offered to end the drought if she sacrificed herself
to Them. The Lady agreed and died. Each spring the Lady of Shavano appears on the mountianside,
raising her arms in praise to the Creators of all life ensuring that the rains will continue to fall.
Mount Shavano is a great place for ceremonies intended on bringing more rain and ending droughts.
Some of our Tuatha have adopted the same stance as the Lady of Shavano whenever we pray or do ceremonies
for rain.
You can see the Lady each spring by driving up Hwy 50 just to the north and west of Salida.
