In order to heal the troubles of the world we must heal the rift between ourselves and the spirits. If our worlds move to far apart then great suffering will be the result. It is this fact that motivates the aspiring Druid and neo-Celt to give respect to those beings without whom we would not exist.
"Spirits are the invisible forces of life - the inner spiritual components of the outer physical forms, which may be invoked to manifest their benign powers so that man may continue his never-ending journey." - Frank Waters
Without the help and intercession of the spirits man would not exist, period. In the beginning, it was the spirits who were given the task of raising and teaching men. They taught us how to make fire, build shelters, tools, the properties of plants, the movements of the stars, and how to live in the world in harmony. I believe the spirits truly loved us and saw us as their children in those elder days.
Times, however, have changed. Man has run rampant over the face of the Earth. Like adolescents who know no better, we take whatever we wish and do not think of the consequences of what we do. Like parents of teen-agers, the spirits are understandably, and justifiably distressed. Some are outright angry. Because of our actions some spirits see the need for mankind to be erased from the planet for the good of the whole. Others have not forgotten their original duty given to them by the Gods, and realize that true guardians do not abandon their children during a critical phase in their growth. For these reasons, and others, the spirits of the world can work in negative and positive ways.
One of my first experiences of spirits was in a canyon in southwest Colorado next to a very powerful waterfall. For one of the rare times in my life I was given the opportunity to "see" the Otherworld. I witnessed spirits of clouds that reveled in their strength, flexing their muscles, and gliding high above the world. A dwarf working within the Earth, who was just as amazed to see a mythical "human" as I was to see a "mythical" Dwarf! The trees beheld me with a thousand stoic faces, and the waterfall itself roared at me with sharp interest. That experience left a mark on me that will always remain.
